This Week in San Francisco Parking

It’s that time again! The monthly San Francisco media kerfuffle about how it’s harder to park in the city than it is at the Vallejo Wal-Mart. Citation revenue is down, and the SFMTA plans to step up enforcement efforts. An inartful comment from a spokesman communicating this point launched a firestorm of fake outrage. [KTVU]

As we reported last week, a Chronicle columnist seriously brought the crazy when he seemed to claim non-drivers don’t pay their bills; local politico Phil Ting quickly jumped into the fray to try to channel the outrage to his advantage as he eyes a run for mayor. [The Bay Citizen]

Then there’s the pilot program to mount cameras on street sweepers and mail tickets to people who forget to move their car. [The Snitch]

Streetsblog points out that you can park for free if you’re good with a baseball bat. [Streetsblog SF]

An old unenforced rule regarding “early-bird” parking rates could be taken more seriously to bring in more money. [Examiner]

Many of the reports referenced a study that compares parking in the city to other decidedly less-dense urban centers throughout the country – a study that we rebuked several months ago. You can find that story by clicking here.
