Reader Mail: Blog Inspires Epic Five Day Transit Journey from S.F. to Pasadena

Reader Adrienne saw the SF Weekly cover story about my San Francisco to Los Angeles local public transit itinerary, and decided to one-up Joe Eskenazi. For Thanksgiving, Adrienne traveled from San Francisco to Pasadena in five days using only local transit – she made a vacation out of the journey, spending time in Monterey, Paso Robles, Santa Barbara, and Solvang. She arrived the Tuesday before Thanksgiving in her sister’s driveway, just as she planned. Adrienne’s letter is below – Joe also interviewed her for his SF Weekly blog. Now, which of you is going to one-up Adrienne and Joe and go even further using only local buses and trains?

Dear Matt,

I wanted to let you know that I used a modified version of your San Francisco-to-Los Angeles itinerary to visit my sister in Pasadena for Thanksgiving. I had read about your itinerary in Joe Eskenazi’s SF Weekly article in June 2011. It took me 20 buses and trains, but I did it and I had a lot of fun.

I took longer than you did to reach my destination. I stayed overnight in Monterey, Paso Robles, and Santa Barbara, and I spent the weekend in Solvang. (Clean Air Express now operates a 6:15 am bus between Solvang and Goleta).

I had to arrive in Pasadena on the Tuesday before Thanksgiving, and that is exactly what happened. If I hadn’t wanted to spend the day before in Santa Barbara, I would have used Lompoc’s COLT system instead of Clean Air Express. COLT runs a bus on Tuesdays and Thursdays from Lompoc’s Mission Plaza shopping center to Santa Barbara; it leaves Lompoc at 8:30 am, Santa Barbara at 3:30 pm.

I emailed Joe Eskenazi to thank him for inspiring my trip. He ended up interviewing me over the phone; he may or may not use the material for a blog article.

I owe you my thanks for co-inspiring my vacation with your excellent blog.

Sincerely,
Adrienne
