New Historic Streetcar Line & Bike Sharing Pilot Planned for SF in Time for America’s Cup

With the massive America’s Cup sailing event coming to San Francisco next year, planning officials are hoping to push through some long-sought-after transit, cycling, and general streetscape improvements to better accommodate the thousands of spectators. We learned this week of a few specific projects that are being targeted to come online before the Cup:

  • Muni plans to start testing the E-Embarcadero historic streetcar line by this summer. It will use the same right-of-way as the F-Market & Wharves line from Fisherman’s Wharf to the Ferry Building, and will then continue along the Embarcadero and King Street to the Caltrain Depot (and later to Pier 70). • The city plans to expedite revamping two blocks of Jefferson Street between Jones and Hyde as part of the Fisherman’s Wharf Public Realm Plan. Among the changes: street parking will be eliminated, the north sidewalk will be widened by 15 feet, and the street will allow two-way travel with narrower lanes. [Streetsblog SF]
  • The pilot of the Bay Area’s regional bike-sharing program, which will make bikes available for rent in the Financial District and on the Peninsula at Caltrain stations, is expected to come online this summer. [SFMTA]
